Insect Excavation Kit

My 6 year old son, Aiden, and I had so much fun with this Insect Excavation kit. He is already asking to do it again. This was the perfect week to try out the kit. He had off school on Presidents Day and we had Mother/Son time. Of course, he has been asking to play with this since it came in the mail. So, here is the fun that ensued!
The directions say to lay out some news paper underneath the giant green beetle and start digging with the tools provided. Aiden did not wait one second, he started scraping and digging away. At, first you have to scrape away the green paint but, then it is easier going once that is gone. You can use either side of the tool to dig or scrape. One side is smooth, like a screw driver, the other side is more ridged, like a saw.
My son was really into this and said he was gonna do it all himself. He had fun digging away and making a mess.
Soon after, we found our first insect! It was a spider. Aiden had fun using the brush to help clean off the spider and then using the magnifying glass to get a better look.
After finding his first insect he wanted to hurry up and find the rest so, of course, I has recruited to dig up the rest. There were 2 more insects to find and I went to town with dirt flying and my son cheering me on. Then we dug up a beetle and a scorpion.
Each insect is preserved in acrylic so you are not really touching the creepy crawlies. The kit comes with a digging tool, brush and magnifying glass as well as a 12 page info guide about insects and an activity booklet. All my son cared about is the bugs but, again he is only 6 and this is recommend for kids 6 to 12.
This was a lot of fun for both me and my son. Now he wants to excavate more things and I do too!
